ENGLISH BELOW

Lulu.com)

Lulu.com

How to Write a Book

Why write a book?
You don’t need a degree. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t need to be rich.

You just need to know something that other people don’t know — or have lived through something that other people haven’t.

That thing is called experience. And experience is the only thing a book really needs.

If you have lived in Cambodia, survived hardship, laughed at something absurd, watched your grandparents cook, or simply noticed the small details of village life — you have enough material for a book.

Step 0: Choose your tools

You don’t need an expensive laptop, a fancy desk, or expensive software to write a book.

Pen and paper — This is still one of the most powerful ways to start. No screen glare, no notifications, no distractions.

Smartphone — I wrote two books on a simple Android phone. The only issue is screen size, which can cause eye strain.

Tablet with keyboard and mouse — This is what I recommend as the minimum comfort solution. It’s what I used to build Sita Books.

Laptop or computer — The most powerful tool you can have. If you have one, use it. If not, don’t worry — you don’t need it to start.

How to organize your work (Zotero) — I recommend using Zotero (search on the Play Store). It lets you store notes, research files, and chapters all in one place.

The golden rule: The best tool is the one you actually use.

Step 1: Write down the idea

Write down 3 things you know better than anyone else:

  • Your own life
  • Your work
  • The stories your grandmother or grandfather told you
Or maybe it wasn’t something you lived — it was something you dreamed.

Mary Shelley didn’t live through a monster rising from the dead. She woke up from a nightmare, wrote it down, and Frankenstein was born.

The dream you had last week — the one that made you sit up in bed — that could be a story.

What if a Khmer boy found a hidden door in Angkor Wat that led to a magical universe? What if a village girl could talk to the spirits of the forest?

That is how a universe is born — not from a plan, but from a dream.

Now pick one. That’s your book.

Step 2: Plan a little bit

Spend one hour sketching your story. Start with keywords, environment, characters, and a rough timeline.

Keywords: Write down 5 to 10 words that capture the feeling of your story (e.g., jungle, ghost, magic, revenge, lost love).

Environment: Where does your story take place? (e.g., a remote village, a rice field at sunset, an ancient temple at night).

Characters: Name, age, one fear, and one desire.

Timeline: 5 to 10 bullet points that show the rough arc of your story.

Warning: As you write, the characters will start to talk back. Don’t be afraid to change your plan.

Now write the first paragraph: You don’t have to start at the beginning. You can write from the middle or the end. A good start is one you actually want to write.

Sample first paragraph:
“The key had been lying under the floorboards for thirty years…”

Write one paragraph. If it doesn’t feel right, write another. The first draft is not your final draft — it’s just a starting point.

Writer’s Block Traps (and how to escape them)

Trap 1: Fear of page count
Don’t count pages. Write one paragraph a day.

Trap 2: Fear of perfection
The first draft is not for readers — it’s for you. Write it messy, and edit later.

Trap 3: Fear of not knowing the ending
You don’t need to know the ending. Many great stories discovered themselves while being written.

Trap 4: Fear that no one will read it
Write for yourself. The people who need your story will find it later.

Trap 5: Fear of not having time
You don’t need two hours. You need 5 minutes. Write three sentences before you sleep.

The golden rule: Writer’s block isn’t a lack of ideas — it’s a lack of permission to write badly. Write badly, and edit later.

How long does it take to write a book?

It depends on the time you have and the time you spend.

But here’s the secret: Writing a book is like meditation. If you do it right, you eliminate time from your mind.

If you write every day — even just 10 minutes — you will finish faster than someone who waits for a perfect two‑hour block.

It takes as long as it takes. But if you write without watching the clock, it will take far less time than you fear.

Step 3: Read it out loud

Once you have a draft, read it out loud to yourself. If a sentence sounds awkward when you say it, rewrite it.

Then, give it to a friend. If they understand it without you explaining, you’ve done your job.

Step 4: Publish (using Lulu.com)

You’ve written a book. Now you need to make it real.

Lulu.com is the easiest publishing website. You can upload your book for free, set a price, and anyone can buy it.

  • Upload your book for free
  • Set a price from $5 to $20
  • If printing costs $5 and you sell for $15 — you keep $10 per copy
No publisher. No distributor. No one taking a cut.

The final truth

You don’t need to be a professional writer to write a book.

You just need to be someone who lived something real — and had the courage to write it down.

That’s it.

When you’re finished, send it to us. We might put it in the library.

Because the old books are not the only ones that deserve to be read.

The next one could be yours.
